Gun Review: The .460 Smith & Wesson Magnum
Posted by William Kapeles on August 12, 2007
Have you ever been punched in the nose? That numbing, odd feeling you get from the compression of someone’s fist on your nasal cartilage is exactly how it feels to shoot the monster Smith and Wesson handgun. Combine the odd facial sensations with standing too close to a BBQ or a light sunburn and you can appreciate the muzzle blast of the weapon.
***UPDATE***: We have received several inquiries about the price of this weapon. Once we receive our FFL from the government, we will be retailing the 460XVR 5″ SS version of this weapon at $909.99 + sales tax (price reflects 2.5% cash discount). If you are interested in ordering this or any firearm from us when we’re legal, go to www.bpcustomshop.com.
Robert, one of our regular customers, recently picked up this beauty and invited us along for the weapon’s baptism. I knew it was going to be powerful, but the gun’s sheer size and blast literally blew me away.
The weapon itself is made on the S&W X frame. It is basically a beefed up 686 frame revolver. It is a 5 shot, and can also fire the .454 Casull round. It weighs in around 7 pounds, give or take, yet is still fairly comfortable to hold and fire.
The round is also a monster. Take a look at the photo below. Left to right are the .460 S&W Magnum, the .45 ACP, the .40 S&W, and the 9mm Parabellum. The obvious size difference speaks volumes.

I must admit, I do not have the data on velocity and muzzle energy at my fingertips as I write this, but suffice it to say that both are in excess of 1900. The weapon would make an excellent hunting handgun or rhino killer. I would not, however, recommend it for home defense (unless of course you do not mind shooting through several houses and making yourself deaf in the process).
One word of warning friends, make absolutely sure you and everyone around you is wearing proper ear protection when you fire this monster. To not cover your ears would be a grave mistake. I believe that Paul and I would also recommend that you take some Ibuprofen or other headache medicine to the range with you when you shoot it.
Please enjoy the videos of Robert blasting away with this great new weapon. I regret that the videos do not do the firearm justice, so I encourage you to go out and buy one for yourself! Remember to save your money for ammo, though, as the average box of 20 for this beast will run around $25.00. We will have reload data for this cartridge on ammodata.com as soon as possible.
